Small Build Co. Scale models of homes and buildings, made in Ferny Hills

You worked hard for this house. Now you can hold it.

A white 1:100 model of your home and lot, like an architect's model, made from your own building plans: the brick and cladding, every window and door, the roof, the driveway, the garden and the fences. Pick it up, turn it around, put it on the shelf, and see the place you worked for from every side.

A house is too big to take in all at once

See the whole thing

You know your home one room at a time. This is the first time you get to see all of it at once, roofline and all.

Put the work on show

The saving, the plans, the build, the waiting. It sits on a shelf or a desk and people ask about it.

Keep it for good

Houses get renovated, extended and sold. The model stays the way it was when it was yours.

From plans to shelf in four steps

  1. Upload your plans

The PDF plans from your builder or architect. A floor plan and elevations are enough. It takes two minutes.

  2. See your house

Your plans are read, checked a second time and modelled automatically, usually within ten minutes: finishes, windows, doors, roof and landscaping. Spin the preview around on screen. Looking costs nothing.

  3. Say yes when it looks right

Go ahead, or ask for changes if something is off. One free set of changes is included. Your card is held when you order. I review every order within 24 hours and it is only charged once I confirm I can make it.

  4. Hold it

Printed at 1:100 in white in Ferny Hills, like an architect's model. Pick it up for free, or it comes to your door by Australia Post.

On the model

Modelled from your plans
  • The walls and roof, from the dimensions
  • Every window and door, set into the walls with a frame
  • Weatherboards and board cladding, as lines
  • Render panels, slightly proud of brickwork
  • Open alfresco and porch areas, on their posts
  • Driveway, paths, slabs, garden beds, decks and pools
  • Fences, retaining walls and fixtures like the air conditioner and letterbox
  • Your address, the scale and a north point on the plinth
Left off
  • Trees
  • Lawn texture
  • Colour: it is one white piece, like an architect's presentation model
  • Anything not drawn on your plans. Nothing invented.

Building something bigger?

I also make models for builders, developers and project teams: townhouse rows, school buildings, halls and commercial jobs, from DA or construction drawings or a site survey. Usually 1:100 to 1:250 so the whole site fits on the plate, with the ground levels, retaining walls and fences that are drawn.

Good for client handovers, display suites, community consultation and the site office. Send the drawings to hello@smallbuild.com.au and I'll come back with a scale, a size and a price.

Hi, I'm Jono

I like building things.

My day job is building social housing for women. I also make street furniture. Both take years of drawings, meetings and approvals before anything stands up, and the day it stands up is still my favourite part of the job.

This is the fast version of that feeling. Your plans go in, and soon after there is a house on the bench that you can pick up.

Somebody worked hard on your house. The roofline, the way it sits on the block, the part you would point to first. Then it got built and the drawings went in a drawer. I think it deserves to exist one more time, small enough for a shelf.

You see your model on screen before you pay anything. If I can't do your house justice, I say so and nothing is charged. It costs about the same as a good dinner out, and you get to keep it.

I'm in Ferny Hills. Come and pick it up, or I'll post it.

Jono

Before you upload

What do I need to send?

The PDF plans from your builder, architect or designer: the floor plan, the elevations and the site plan. A landscape plan and a roof plan add more detail. If you can't find them, your council can usually supply a copy for a fee.

How accurate is it?

It is built from your plans and nothing else, as one white piece, like an architect's presentation model. The walls and roof come from the dimensions; every window and door is set into the walls with a frame; weatherboards and board cladding show as lines, render panels stand slightly proud of brickwork; open alfresco and porch areas stand on their posts. On the lot you get what the site and landscape plans show: driveway, paths, slabs, garden beds, decks, pools, fences, retaining walls and fixtures like the air conditioner and letterbox. No trees, no lawn texture, nothing invented. Your plans are read once and then checked a second time against the drawings, item by item.

What if I don't like the preview?

Then it costs you nothing. Ask for your one free set of changes, or leave it there.

What is the Christmas tree version?

The same model of your house, printed small enough to hang on the tree, about 65 mm across for a typical home. A ribbon runs down through the roof and walls and is knotted underneath. It is A$60, and you see it in 3D before you order, the same as the shelf model.

How big is it?

1:100, so every metre is 10 mm of model. A typical house on a 32 metre lot comes out about 320 mm long, sitting on a base of its lot with the landscaping. Lots too big for the printer's 340 x 320 mm plate are cropped around the house, and homes too big for the plate are made at 1:150. The preview shows exactly what you get.

When do I pay?

After you have seen your preview and decided to order. Your card is held at that point, I review the order within 24 hours, and it is charged only when I confirm I can make it. If I can't, or I don't confirm in time, the hold is released.

What happens to the print files?

Your model is kept with your order, exactly as you approved it, so it can be printed again or downloaded again later from your order link. Your name and email are removed 12 months after your order is finished. If you buy the print files only, you download them from your order link once I confirm, as one STL file with the printer settings. The files are for your own personal use: please don't sell them or share them publicly, because they are made from plans someone else drew. Your PDF plans are never stored here.

Can I give one as a gift?

Yes, as long as you can get the plans. It suits a housewarming, a handover day or the anniversary of moving in.

Is it OK to use my plans?

Plans usually belong to the designer or builder who drew them, so check with them before you upload.

Pickup or post?

Pickup from Ferny Hills is free. Postage is Australia Post Parcel Post at cost, worked out from the boxed size and weight of your model and shown before you pay.
